On February 19th 2015 Providence commit Alex Owens announced on his Twitter account that he would miss the remainder of his high school season with a knee injury after having an MRI the previous day. Wednesday Owens’ confirmed the worst fear that the MRI revealed a torn left ACL. Owens will have surgery on Friday, February 27th.
The severity of the tear and length of any rehabilitation are unknown at this time. Some players return to action between 6-9 months while others may take 8-12 months. Owens was having a stellar season for Oak Ridge prior to injuring the knee on February 6th. Providence has a player currently on their roster recovering from a torn ACL in Rodney Bullock.
After giving an update on Drew Edwards of Calvert Hall and Ryan Fazekas of Marquette Catholic next up is an update on the final member of Providence’s committed class of 2015, Alex Owens. Owens plays for coach Alex Jackson at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, FL making him the recruit who will have to travel the furthest to attend Providence college in this class at over 1,200 miles. Fazekas isn’t too far off with over 900 miles between Michigan City, IN and Providence, RI though. He also plays for Each 1 Teach 1 on the Nike EYBL circuit.
Last season Oak Ridge went 19-10 and lost to eventual State Champion, Winter Park, in the Region 8A-2 semifinals. The Pioneers are off to a 10-2 start to this season and coach Jackson called Owens “a key contributor” to the team’s early season success.
