Providence Roster Review & Outlook

It seems the 2014-15 roster is now complete with the addition of German guard Tyree Chambers* so I’ll take an in-depth look at the roster and how it’s shaping up both in the short term and the long term.

If you want to see the current scholarship situation for each season through 2018-2019 there is a dropdown menu at the top of the menu bar above. You can also click this link.

Technically the 2014-15 roster has one open scholarship remaining and maybe Ed Cooley will look to add a mid-year transfer for next season to balance the classes (more on that later) but I believe this will be the group that the Friars will go to battle with this upcoming season. Let’s look at the roster by position group:

Update: Two Freshmen NOT Cleared to Travel to Italy

UPDATE: The social media posts previously linked below have been removed and the Providence Journal’sKevin McNamara is reporting that nothing has changed regarding the two freshmen. KMac added that they are on the bus because they will be heading to New Jersey to practice. The team is flying out of Newark.

Three Freshman Won’t Make Italy Trip

Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal is reporting that 3 of the 4 incoming freshman will not travel with the team to Italy next week. Jalen Lindsey has become ill in the last few days and foreign born big men Paschal Chukwu and Ben Bentil have yet to be fully cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. As McNamara points out in his article, the Clearinghouse typically takes a longer look at foreign born players to be sure they haven’t competed in any professional capacity prior to coming to the United States.

It’s another frustrating turn of events for Ed Cooley and his staff especially because Chukwu and Bentil are both strong students and are just wrapping up a successful summer session at PC. This now means the active body contingent for the Friars in Italy will consist of 6 scholarship players and 2 walk ons. Kris Dunn will be held out of game action as a precaution andTed Bancroft has an injured shoulder  which leaves just Rodney Bullock, Kyron Cartwright, Carson Desrosiers, Tyler Harris, LaDontae Henton and Junior Lomomba as the 6 available scholarship players to go along with walk-on’s Tom Planek and Casey Woodring.

I’ll have a more in depth preview of the Friars’ Italy trip on Monday.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 5/16/14

Another weekend of competition where coaches cannot observe but that hasn’t stopped them from offering a lot of players. You’ll see below the guys that PC has offered lately. Nike EYBL continues action for the 2nd weekend in a row with Session #3 in Hampton, VA on route to the Peach Jam in mid-July. The Adidas Gauntlet picks up where it left off in the April live period with session #2 in Indianapolis this weekend. PC is heavily involved with many elite players that are playing in both the Nike EYBL and the Adidas Gauntlet. Those two AAU circuits are widely considered to be the two best in terms of talent and organization. Here are all of the events this weekend courtesy of CBS Sports’ Jeff Borzello:

  • Other big news from last weekend is that the Friars never got Larry Austin on campus due to a death in his family. He then committed to Chris Mack and Xavier on Saturday so that’s another 2014 guard off the Friars Big Board.

  • ESPN – Adam Finkelstein – Class of 2014’s best shot-blockers
  • 3. Paschal Chukwu, Providence

Chukwu is going to have the biggest adjustment of any player on this list when it comes to the level of competition, but his ability to block and changes shots at the rim will be his most immediate impact at Providence. He’s very aggressive patrolling the paint from the weak side, but he also utilizes his shot-blocking prowess to make up for his current lack of strength when defending the ball on the block. While he’s going to need to get stronger, he has an ability to utilize his size and length in order to recover with a block — even when pushed farther under the rim than he would ideally like.
