Providence and Ed Cooley have agreed to a contract extension, according to a release from the school. The news of negotiations was first reported by Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal on Monday. No details of the agreement were reported in the release but quotes from Providence Athletic Director Bob Driscoll, President Rev. Brian Shanley and Cooley himself all speak of this contract extension keeping Cooley “at Providence College for life.”

Report: Providence, Ed Cooley Working on Extension
Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal reported on Monday that Ed Cooley and Providence are working on a contract extension. Cooley’s current contract runs through 2021 after a previous extension following the 2012-13 season. Cooley’s original contract signed in March of 2011 was for a term of six years with the extension in 2013 lengthening it for another four. With nothing finalized and Providence’s propensity for not releasing contracts or their details, the length of this latest extension or the surrounding terms are unclear as of this publishing. McNamara’s article quoted Providence’s latest tax filing from 2013-14 that showed Cooley’s total pay that year to be $1.5 million. It should be noted that the total figure likely includes bonuses for winning the Big East Tournament and making an NCAA Tournament appearance in March of 2014. Providence’s fiscal year is July 1-June 30.

Providence Announces Game-Changing Ruane Friar Development Center
Providence has upgraded their facilities for athletics massively in the 14 years since Bob Driscoll arrived as the school’s Athletic Director. There are new fields, a new stadium for soccer and lacrosse, a track, a new softball field, new tennis courts, big upgrades to both the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and Schneider Arena. The one missing piece is a dedicated facility for men’s basketball — something that every other Big East member has on their campus. On Wednesday Driscoll, along with President Brian Shanley, OP. announced that they have received a major gift from former Board of Trustees Chair Michael A. Ruane and his wife, Elizabeth Ruane that will allow the Ruane Friar Development Center to break ground in the Spring of 2016. The Ruane’s also donated a large sum towards the construction of the Ruane Center for the Humanities that opened in September 2013. The project is two-phased with the first phase expected to be completed by the Summer of 2017.
