It’s Officially the College Basketball Offseason and I Need Your Support

The calendar has turned to April and with last night’s result in the books it’s officially the offseason in college basketball for all 351 schools. The coaching carousel is in full swing and the recruiting wire is buzzing with de-commitments, re-commitments, transfers and more. Providence has had great success these last 4 years and I’ve been lucky enough to cover the team for the last 3. Before I get any further into this post I want to express my deep gratitude and appreciation to everyone that has visited the site, tweeted, emailed, messaged or discussed Providence hoops at a bar with me these last 1,170 days since pcbb1917.com went live back on January 21, 2014. There have been more than 1.24 million views here since then and I think that’s pretty cool for a fanbase of a small Catholic school in Rhode Island.

Providence Sophomore Guard Ricky Council II to Transfer

Providence now has their second offseason departure with the news that sophomore guard Ricky Council II will transfer, he announced on his Instagram page. The North Carolina native spent two seasons at Providence with very limited minutes. In 19 career games at Providence, Council averaged 0.9 points/game and 0.5 rebounds/game in 3.5 minutes/game. Council came to Providence after doing a post-graduate year at Moravian Prep and was billed as a shooter and scorer. His best game at Providence was in November of his freshman year when he scored 5 points in 9 minutes in a blowout win over Brown.

The Other Shoe Dropped Against USC, Future Remains Bright in Friartown

Obviously the result of this game wasn’t what Providence fans wanted. The 15 point halftime lead never truly felt comfortable. That’s a product of watching plenty of Providence games over the years that has fans always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Usually that other shoe is a player transferring or an injury or a coach leaving that cripples the program in the short term and sometimes even the long term.

Deep Breaths, Friartown: Better Season Than Expected Edition, Perspective

I did a post like this after the news of Paschal Chukwu’s transfer broke back in May of 2015. That edition of “Deep Breaths, Friartown” was more about trying to make lemonade out of lemons while trying to shake of the seemingly illogical move by Chukwu to leave a starting role with a lottery pick point guard in Kris Dunn. Time — and plenty of on-court success since the big man went north to Syracuse — has moved Chukwu’s out of nowhere decision off most Providence fans’ radars. The current hot button topic that is the motivation for this post is the no-show performance by Providence in their Big East Tournament quarterfinal game on Thursday night. While it was painful to watch and I’m sure Friar fans turned off the TV or walked out of Madison Square Garden with a bad taste in their mouths, it’s important to keep things in perspective. And that’s ultimately why I’m writing this. Perspective.
