Providence Sophomore Drew Edwards Out 4-6 Weeks After Knee Surgery

Providence sophomore guard Drew Edwards will be out 4-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery, according to Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal. Edwards will have the surgery on June 2nd, per a source. Edwards played in 33 games during his rookie season with the Friars and averaged 2.4 points/game and 1.6 rebounds/game. His best game of the season came on December 12th when he poured in a career-best 17 points in a win against Bryant. The play that will stand out the most about Edwards is that he was the in-bounder who dished to Rodney Bullock for the last second layup that beat USC to give Providence their first NCAA Tournament win since 1997.

Edwards is currently back on campus attending summer classes. He will be one of several returning guards vying for increases playing time in 2016-17.

Ben Bentil Will Remain in 2016 NBA Draft

Providence will lose two players to the NBA Draft with sophomore Ben Bentil confirming on Sunday that he’s foregoing his remaining eligibility and will join teammate Kris Dunn as draft eligible underclassmen. It isn’t clear if Bentil has officially signed with an agent, but he presumably will soon now that he’s definitely leaving school. Bentil is being projected as a late first or early second round draft pick after a strong sophomore season in which he improved his scoring by nearly 15 points/game to lead the Big East at 21.1 points/game.

Fox Sports 1, Providence and How Far They’ve Come in Three Seasons Together

Before diving into Providence’s viewership numbers on Fox Sports 1 over the last 3 seasons, I think it’s important to take a jaunt down memory lane to regain some perspective on how the Big East began. I’d also like to remind people where Providence stood within the Big East conference 5 long years ago in May of 2011 as compared to where they stand after 3 short years in the current Big East. Recall that the Big East conference in May of 2011 consisted of 16 teams bloated by the focus on football. Many of the schools making up the 16 didn’t exactly fit the mold of what Dave Gavitt cooked up in the late 1970’s.

Gavitt envisioned East coast basketball schools coming together for each other’s benefit and that came to fruition in 1979 when Boston College, Connecticut (at the time, not a football school), Georgetown, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Syracuse got together to form the original membership. Villanova joined a year later and then Pittsburgh was added in 1982. Georgetown won the Big East’s first national championship in 1984 but it was in 1985 that the little league of East coast schools announced itself as big time with 3 schools from the Big East making the Final 4. Georgetown beat St. John’s to advance to their second straight national title game but it would be Villanova winning in upset fashion over the vaunted Hoyas. Ah, those were the days.

Providence and Ed Cooley have agreed to a contract extension, according to a release from the school. The news of negotiations was first reported by Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal on Monday. Report: Providence, Ed Cooley Working on Extension

Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal reported on Monday that Ed Cooley and Providence are working on a contract extension. Cooley’s current contract runs through 2021 after a previous extension following the 2012-13 season. Cooley’s original contract signed in March of 2011 was for a term of six years with the extension in 2013 lengthening it for another four. With nothing finalized and Providence’s propensity for not releasing contracts or their details, the length of this latest extension or the surrounding terms are unclear as of this publishing. McNamara’s article quoted Providence’s latest tax filing from 2013-14 that showed Cooley’s total pay that year to be $1.5 million. It should be noted that the total figure likely includes bonuses for winning the Big East Tournament and making an NCAA Tournament appearance in March of 2014. Providence’s fiscal year is July 1-June 30.
