Friars Handle Bearcats, Eventually
Things were somewhat lackadaisical early again but Providence managed to get out to a 25-8 lead with just under 8 minutes in the first half and everything seemed to be happening as expected at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Five turnovers in less than 4 minutes would allow Binghamton back into the game though as the Bearcats went on a 14-2 run to get the score to 27-22 at the 4:17 mark.
Providence would get the lead back up to 11 following the under 4 minute media timeout but the scrappy Bearcats would claw back again to make the halftime margin only 4 points at 33-29. A 9pm Monday tip, which really started closer to 9:15pm, meant that the Dunk was nearly empty so there wasn’t a lot of crowd energy to give the Friars an assist.
Friars Hold Off Albany in Home Opener After Raising Their 2014 Big East Championship Banner
Ed Cooley was just happy that his Friars got the win against Albany on opening night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday night. “We didn’t have our best team day,” Cooley said after the game. Cooley continued, “I thought today’s win was a culture win. I think our culture won today. We’ve played in so many close games over the years, particularly with LaDontae [Henton] and Tyler [Harris] we just found a way to win.”
Providence vs. Albany Preview with Laura Amato of the Troy Record
I spoke with Laura Amato of the Troy Record on Thursday evening following an Albany basketball practice and she was gracious enough to share her time and thoughts on this matchup between Albany and Providence as well as her overall feel for Albany’s season and placing in the America East coming off of back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Laura also happens to be a St. John’s alum who writes for the SB Nation site Rumble in the Garden covering St. John’s basketball so I’m sure we’ll be speaking with her later in the season when the Friars begin conference play. You can follow her on Twitter @LauraAmato.
Unfortunately I was having technical issues when I spoke with Laura on Thursday so I couldn’t use the audio for a podcast but I have transcribed the interview for the readers to get her thoughts.
Mike Hopkins: I know that Coach Will Brown has discussed that the team is pretty young coming off of last year but a few junior college guys coming in, I think two of them are supposed to start, so what do you think about the team overall?

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi Releases His Preseason Bracketology
Continuing the absurdity started by CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm on Monday with his release of preseason bracketology, Joey Brackets himself put out his first stab at bracketology on Wednesday. His bracket looks a little bit different than Palm’s. Friar fans may be a bit confused to see the ESPN bracket including them while CBS Sports’ did not.
Here are the notable Big East results from Lunardi’s bracket:
