#pcbb On: The Benefits of a Preseason International Trip for Providence

NCAA rules allow every Division 1 men’s basketball program to take an international trip as a team every 4 years. Some teams travel to Canada, Asia or somewhere more tropical. The Providence College Friars will travel to another popular overseas trip locale this Summer – Italy.  The trip will be for 10 days from August 12th-22nd. No specifics have been announced about opponents or number of games but it seems reasonable to assume that the Friars will play about 4 games against Italian professional teams during their stay.

The benefits of these trips are numerous for teams. One of the more obvious benefits is being able to play against someone other than yourself. This is especially valuable for coaches to be able to see any transfers and/or freshman compete in a game atmosphere. The additional practice allowed as a result of and during these trips is another benefit. Normally relegated to 8 weeks of offseason work at only 2 hour per week clips, this trip will afford Coach Cooley and his staff an additional 10 practices before the trip and all kinds of additional practice and game scenarios to evaluate, teach and get a feel for their team during the trip itself. But, at least in my opinion, where the largest benefit of these trips lies is in the bonding and team building potential. Last year we heard from more than one player about the benefit that the preseason Navy SEAL training that the 2013-2014 Friars underwent in August 2013.

Devonte’ Graham Granted Release from App State, Cooley To Visit Tomorrow

Devonte’ Graham announced via Twitter that he was granted his release by new App State coach, Jim Fox.

This means the floodgates will open for the young man who is the best point guard available for the Class of 2014. The competition will be stiff for the Friars but Ed Cooley is a fixture at Brewster already as he is recruiting 2015 Donovan Mitchell and he and Brewster coach Jason Smith have a good relationship. Cooley will be joined by Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Nebraska’s Tim Miles on Thursday when the trio of high major head men will finally be able to interact with Graham now that he is released. Kansas’ Bill Self will be at Brewster on Friday. The reason coaches aren’t already at Brewster is because the current recruiting calendar has us on the tail end of a dead period which means no on campus or off campus in person contact. The dead period ends at 12pm Thursday.

12:01pm April 10th begins the Devonte’ Graham period for a host of schools.

Support Dunks for Donovan; The Purple Friar

Please read the below and click the link here to support Donovan Lindo aka The Purple Friar:

Let’s introduce you to Donovan; an amazing 14 year old boy who is battling Lafora disease. Lafora disease, also known as “Lafora Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsy” (MELF) is a fatal recessive genetic disorder. In layman’s terms… Lafora disease is a severe, and extremely rare form of epilepsy.

Unfortunately, Donovan’s family is all too familiar with Lafora disease. Donovan’s older sister, Mallorie, passed away on March 20, 2013 of the same illness. There are only 20 cases of Lafora disease known throughout the world, and only 2 pairs of siblings with it; Donovan and his sister Mallorie were one of them. Doctors estimate that Donovan suffers some kind of seizure every 10 seconds…can you help?

Our goal is to raise funds for Donovan to support his current medical care and extensive bills. At one point, Donovan needed to be transported via med-flight to Children’s Hospital in Boston and that bill is an astounding $15,000! This is just one of the many bills that Donovan’s family is being forced to deal with in their daily lives…

In addition, we will also be supporting Donovan a.k.a. “The Purple Friar” by creating a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at Providence College to be held this Spring. Donovan loved playing basketball, and now loves watching his favorite team; the 2014 Big East Champion Providence College Friars!

He is a part of the Friar family! Every amount donated will go DIRECTLY to Donovan’s care.
