Providence Freshman Quadree Smith Transferring

Providence announced that freshman big man Quadree Smith “will not return to the College next season and will pursue other academic options.” Smith was a late addition to Providence’s 2015 recruiting class last summer to help add some size to a frontcourt depleted by the transfer of Paschal Chukwu. Smith played in 19 games, averaging 1.7 points/game and 1.1 rebounds/game. Despite getting just over 5 minutes/game last season, Smith was an excellent teammate and always appeared enthusiastic for his fellow Friars. He quickly became a fan favorite in his short time at Providence.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Drop First Road Game at DePaul

This Thoughts from the Road: Laying in Bed Edition is brought to you by tweets from Dr. Vance Morgan and fueled by lasagna from Louie’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.

  • I was trying to decide if this game was harder to watch than the game at Creighton that Providence won, 50-48, at the buzzer. My conclusion was that the losing nature of the game did make it harder to watch. The in-game reasons that made each game hard to watch were the same: Providence couldn’t hit shots and they couldn’t clean their defensive glass. The overall rebounding disparity was much worse in this DePaul game, but the offensive rebounding numbers were similar. DePaul’s 18 offensive rebounds led to 22 second chance points against Providence’s 9 offensive rebounds leading to 8 second chance points. That 14 point differential was massive. The Friars are now 6-1 on the road this season.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Fall Flat at Home Again

This Thoughts from the Road is brought to you by Ed Cooley’s postgame disgust and is fueled by pre-game chicken parm at Anthony’s and postgame buffalo chicken pocket at East Side Pocket.

  • This is a pretty simple game to sum up. Providence got killed on the glass, got beat too often for dribble penetration, gave up too many points in the paint and shot the ball horrifically for a third straight game. Pretty easy to figure out this loss. What isn’t so easy to figure out is: how does Ed Cooley fix it?

Friars Win: (9) Butler 73, (12) Providence 81

This post will serve as the recap and Thoughts from the Road: Church Pew Edition. I attended a wedding during the game and was following the game tracker on my phone, during the mass — sorry I’m not sorry Bridget — and only got a chance to actually watch the game on New Year’s Day. Big thanks to FriarTV for having the recap available at his site.
