Recruiting News: ESPN Released Post-Summer Top 100 for Class of 2016

With the grassroots season coming to a conclusion at the end of July ESPN has released their updated class of 2016 recruit rankings and there are a number of Providence recruiting targets that are in this latest version of ESPN’s Top 100. It’s no surprise who one of the biggest risers in the rankings is with Wenyen Gabriel jumping 60 spots from 83 to 23. ESPN’s Reggie Rankin also spotlighted Friar recruit JJ Matthews a couple of weeks ago as a player that raised his stock enough to possibly break into the Top 100 after the spring and summer. He apparently was on the cusp but not in the Top 100. Matthews is scheduled to visit Providence on October 3rd, along with River City Reign teammate Maliek White. The Big East also has gotten a solid haul already from the ESPN Top 100 in 2016.

Here are some details from ESPN’s latest Class of 2016 Top 100:

Recruiting News: ESPN Updated Class Of 2016 Top 60 Recruit Rankings

ESPN updated their class of 2016 rankings from the top 25 to the top 60 today. Providence is involved with more than 10% of the ESPN top 60.

Similar to Adam Finkelstein yesterday with the class of 2015, Reggie Rankin offered “Ten things to know about the ESPN 60”. The below are excerpts where a PC recruit is mentioned by Rankin:

3. There are some big-time wing scorers in the Class of 2016. These bucket-getters attack defenders and are difficult to deal with when they have the ball in their hands. Shooting guards Malik Monk and Josh Langford, small forwards Mario Kegler and V.J. King and SG Tyus Battle lead the top 20 players.

5. Combination forward Miles Bridges and point guardDennis Smith are fresh faces in the top 10 because of their consistent production. A few dominant performances this spring on the travel circuit clearly separated them from their peers.

8. There’s a lot of variety and versatility in the 2016 class. Many players can play and excel at two positions, both in the post and on the perimeter. A few examples are Bridges, Omari SpellmanAmir CoffeyVance Jackson and Kobi Jordan-Simmons.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 2/21/14

  • Check out the article on 2015 PF from Putnam Science Academy, Mamadou Diarra.
  • PC made an offer over the weekend to 2015 PG Justin Robinson of St. James School in DC. The southpaw transferred there after playing his first 2 seasons of high school ball at Montrose Christian. He also plays for famed AAU squad, Boo Williams, current PC Sophomore Josh Fortune’s former AAU team. Robinson has seen his stock rise from mid-major to possibly high major. PC is his first high major offer and it seems that Cooley and staff have had a way of finding these kinds of players just before their recruitment’s take off. For now, Robinson is likely a backup plan at PG for the 2015 class but he could wind up being a very solid plan B if things don’t work out with Jalen Adams.

  • Scout Friars posted a great article by Kevin San on the push to land guards in 2014. The article, titled PC’S Full Court Press for a Guard, can be found here but a subscription is required.
  • Paschal Chukwu and the Fairfield Prep Stags remained undefeated (19-0) after winning at home against Career last night. Chuwku poured in 21 points in the win and added 11 rebounds and 8 blocked shots despite sitting for nearly 5 minutes in the 2nd half after he picked up his 4th foul. Prep is now 1 win away from a perfect regular season.

ESPN Recruiting Nation – Roundtable: Non-top 50 impact players #pcbb

Interesting piece on those members of the 2014 class that are currently outside the top 50 in the rankings that will have an impact immediately next season at their respective schools. Contributions in the article are from ESPN’s Recruiting Nation staff of Paul Biancardi, Adam Finkelstein, Joel Francisco, Reggie Rankin and John Stovall:

Freshmen have been the talk of this college basketball season, and while the likes ofAndrew WigginsJabari ParkerJoel Embiid, and Julius Randle have all been as good as advertised, there have certainly been plenty of surprises as well.

Tyler Ennis rose up the rankings to the No. 20 spot in the final ESPN 100 of 2013, but few could have predicted that he would this good this early for Syracuse.

Then there are those like Texas’ Isaiah Taylor, Kansas State’s Marcus Foster, and Villanova’s Josh Hart, freshmen who have exceeded the prevailing expectations at the time of their signings and have made an immediate impact.

In some cases, these contributions can be more predictable than others, such as when there is an immediate opportunity or a particularly good fit with the program’s style of play. With that in mind, we asked our team of RecruitingNation experts to look ahead and identify one current ESPN 100 prospect outside of the top 50 who they believe can make a notable immediate contribution.

Reggie Rankin: I think center Paschal Chukwu (Westport, Conn./Fairfield College Prep), a Providence signee, will be a player outside of the top 50 that will make an immediate impact next season as a college freshman. The No. 61 player brings Friars coach Ed Cooley an immediate rim protector on the defensive end of the floor with his length. The 7-foot-1 Chukwu’s mobility and shot-block timing on or away from the ball is a thing of beauty. He is also a very active and productive rebounder. His defense is clearly ahead of his offense, but Chukwu will develop his already soft touch once he arrives on the Providence campus. Adding strength should be at the top of his to-do list in addition to his offensive development, but make no mistake about it: Chukwu will make opponents think twice about challenging him at the rim.
