Recruiting never stops, even during the course of the college basketball season. That was especially true between Providence’s game on December 10th against UMass and now. Ed Cooley and his staff hit the road shortly after that win over UMass last Saturday and they’ve used the extra time during the final exam break to go see some of their top recruits in action. Cooley was spotted at DeMatha Catholic on Saturday and Sunday where he took in the action and specifically watched 2017 commit Nate Watson and 2018 target Hameir Wright. Watson is already in the fold and is having a very good senior season at Bishop O’Connell.
The early signing period for college basketball begins on Wednesday, November 11th and lasts until November 18th. Players have that 7 day window to lock in their pledges and bind their commitments to their schools. Providence currently has 1 player committed in the class of 2016: Maliek White. He is going to sign his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday with dual ceremonies happening at his school — George Wythe — and the facility of his grassroots team — River City Reign. There should be some photos and quotes from that out tomorrow.
Ed Cooley and the Friar coaching staff have been trying to reel in a point guard for the last few recruiting cycles. Kyron Cartwright is the only true point guard currently on the roster with Drew Edwards and Tyree Chambers being thought of as more combo guards. Cooley was able to add to that group on Sunday with the addition of Richmond, VA native Maliek White. White visited Providence over the weekend after canceling his trip to Cincinnati.
The recruiting buzz continues to pick up around the Providence program as they are in the midst of stretch hosting visitors. It started last weekend with 2016 wing Jalen Johnson and the Friar staff played double duty this weekend by hosting two recruits. Power forward Kevin Marfo‘s visit was scheduled for this weekend all along, but hosting point guard Maliek White wasn’t supposed to happen until next weekend. The Richmond, VA native decided to cancel his visit to Cincinnati and move up his trip to Friartown, a source familiar with the recruitment told pcbb1917.com on Friday. On Saturday White’s list was cut to a final four, according to the Twitter account of his grassroots program.
The recruiting buzz around the Providence program has been steadily picking up over the last few weeks as lists have been cut down and official visits scheduled. This weekend begins a massively important 30 day stretch for Ed Cooley and his staff as they will host 6 recruits and have their annual Late Night Madness. The visitors begin with a wing from the class of 2016 today and end with a slew of recruits at Late Night Madness on October 17th with some other high profile recruits coming to the campus in between.
There’s a new highlight mixtape out for 2016 Word of God Christian Academy PG Jalen Harris. Harris is scheduled for an official visit to Providence on October 9th.
