Providence Recruiting Update: Jeff Battle Making His Presence Felt on the Trail

Bob Simon was Providence’s lead recruiter on many of the Friars’ top targets while he was part of Ed Cooley’s staff. With Simon now associate head coach at Alabama under Avery Johnson the task for Cooley was to bring in another strong recruiting assistant coach. He turned to old friend Jeff Battle. The differences between the two coach’s networks have been easy to spot. Battle has focused much of his attention in the first 4 months with the Friars on recruiting the states of Virginia and North Carolina. Both states are quite fertile with talented basketball prospects and Battle is getting Providence involved with some of the best players in those states, along with a few hidden gems that appear ready for a rise. Let’s jump in and see what Battle has been up to lately.

Providence Recruiting Update: New Offer to 2016 PG, Another 2016 Guard Heading Elsewhere?

It’s been a little while since I did my last recruiting update post. Part of that is because things have been somewhat quiet on the recruiting front. There are a few new developments that should be noted as the calendar turns to September tomorrow. First is that Providence has extended an offer to another point guard in the class of 2016. More on that below. Second, and not necessarily unrelated to the first, is that it appears Shamorie Ponds may be slipping away from the Friars. Let’s get into each of these.

Recruiting News: Scout.com Released Post-Summer Class Of 2016 Top 100 Recruit Rankings

The same day that ESPN released their update class of 2016 Top 100 list after the summer grassroots season Scout.com also came out with their updated rankings. Wenyen Gabriel was a major mover in the Scout.com rankings and is the only player to be a new 5-star recruit since the last update. He also catapulted in the top 10 in Scout’s ranking after not even being ranked last time Scout released a Top 100 for this class. Gabriel’s rise has been meteoric.

Scout.com showed more love for Gabriel but not quite as much for other Providence recruits. Bruce Brown and Shamorie Ponds were much more highly thought of in ESPN’s version of rankings while Sedee Keita was ranked 80th overall in ESPN’s and not even close to the top 100 in Scout.com’s. Keita is listed as a 2-star recruit in Scout.com’s database. Having seen him play I don’t see how that’s possible.

2016 Point Guard Maliek White to Visit Providence

With Quentin Jackson cutting Providence from his list on Wednesday it didn’t take long for some good news to be reported in the search for a point guard in the class of 2016. Adam Finkelstein reported on Twitter that Maliek White will visit Providence on October 2nd. White is the grassroots teammate of another Providence target visiting that same weekend in power forward JJ Matthews. The program that both White and Matthews play for is the Richmond, VA-based River City Reign.
