Thoughts from the Road: Friars Ice Cold at Home, Fall to Xavier

This Thoughts from the Road is brought to you by the energy inside the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and is fueled by Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee…a lot of it.

  • The Dunkin’ Donuts Center was absolutely rocking. The fans piled in early and were raring to go — no doubt after having a few pregame beverages — well before the opening tip. This was the loudest I have ever heard the Dunk. A particular shoutout to the lady sitting over my left shoulder who made Craig Leighton and I a little more deaf than when we entered the arena. Ed Cooley has been longing for a crowd like that and it was clear after the game that it hurt him to disappoint the 12,804 fans in the building.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Defend Home Court, Sweep Butler

This Thoughts from the Road: Home Command Center Edition is brought to you by Jamie Luckie’s whistles and is fueled by Gatorade and some Pepperidge Farms Goldfish.

  • This game was a Big East battle. Not exactly a “classic” Big East battle in the sense that the stops weren’t as frequent as they would have been in the slug it out Big East. But I would argue this is the new kind of classic. A game where the lead see-saws back and forth and big time players make big time plays. The last 10 minutes of game action had the Dunk rocking and each team’s key players rose to the occasion at different times. Roosevelt ones made a layup at the 12:54 mark to put Butler up by 6 — the largest lead of the game by either team. From there, Providence went on an 8-0 run and the final 11:22 featured 4 ties and 5 lead changes. Ben Bentil scored 8 of Providence’s 21 points in the final 12 minutes, Dunn handed out some key assists and banked in the game-winning 3-pointer and Kellen Dunham and Jones were heavily involved in Butler’s side of things. In short, it was a fun game to watch, despite all the whistles.

Fixing Providence’s Slow Starts: Here’s What I Would Change

Providence has been starting more than just the last few games. It happened during the non-conference too. The Friars were able to overcome teams with their superior talent and ability, but Big East play is a different animal. The narrative after the home loss against Marquette on January 5th was: “They didn’t play well, but they played bad and still almost won!” That’s cute. It certainly isn’t the way Ed Cooley is thinking. The slow starts have been exacerbated lately by a lack of offensive firepower that has prevented Providence from making the big comeback that sealed wins earlier in the season. In their last 3 games, Providence is shooting a combined 32% from the field. That won’t cut it against Big East teams most nights. Here’s what I would do to attempt to fix Providence’s slow starts:

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Fall Flat at Home Again

This Thoughts from the Road is brought to you by Ed Cooley’s postgame disgust and is fueled by pre-game chicken parm at Anthony’s and postgame buffalo chicken pocket at East Side Pocket.

  • This is a pretty simple game to sum up. Providence got killed on the glass, got beat too often for dribble penetration, gave up too many points in the paint and shot the ball horrifically for a third straight game. Pretty easy to figure out this loss. What isn’t so easy to figure out is: how does Ed Cooley fix it?
