Deep Breaths, Friartown: Paschal Chukwu Transfer Edition

That news stunned me. I have to admit I didn’t expect to hear that Paschal Chukwu would leave Providence for anywhere but the NBA. I know there are a lot of people searching for answers and/or trying to make sense out of the decision made by the 7’2 Chukwu. The reality is, like Josh Fortune’s transfer decision a year ago (almost to the day), this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense on it’s face. I’m sure there will be some rumblings and rumors that are shared in the days to come but for Chukwu to walk away from a starting role on a team with Kris Dunn is hard to fathom. Let’s all take some deep breaths and try to figure out what might happen next.

2015 Nike EYBL Session 3 Providence Recruiting Guide

Nike EYBL continues with their 3rd session of the regular season on the way to the finals at the Peach Jam. There are a number of Providence recruits playing on the EYBL circuit this year again and even though the coaches won’t be allowed to attend this 3rd session in Houston there will be media members there covering the games and there’s a possibility for some games to be live streamed as well.

There are a few new names since the last recruiting guide and also some names that have fallen off the board with some recent commitments. One other note is Samuel Japhet-Mathias is making his EYBL debut this weekend after having to sit out the first two sessions due to NCAA rules regarding international players being in the USA for less than a year.

Here are the Providence targets in Houston this weekend and when they will be playing. Both the 17U and 16U are in Houston this weekend.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 2nd April 2015 Live Evaluation Period

This is the second of two live evaluation periods in the month of April. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits. As I did last spring and summer I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period.

I’ll also be doing my best to keep up with the map that tracks where Ed Cooley and his staff are during each live period and any recruiting period in between. This post will be updated as the weekend goes on and more information is known. It should be noted that the basketball team’s end of season banquet is on Saturday, April 25th. Cooley will be off the road for that and also the visit of Washington transfer Nigel Williams-Goss. I expect the assistant coaches will skip the banquet to be out recruiting during this critical live evaluation period.

UPDATE: You can watch live games of the EYBL circuit by clicking this link. The players numbers are next to their names below. Big thanks for Craig Leighton for sending the info about the live stream.

Recap of Providence Recruits During First Live Evaluation Period

With the first live evaluation period of April in the books as of Sunday here is a recap of the weekend’s action for over 50 Providence recruits. There were players that were being watched by the Friar staff from the classes of 2015, 2016 and 2017 and they were spread out all over the country.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 1st April 2015 Live Evaluation Period

This will be the first of two live evaluation periods in the month of April. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits. This will be the first time coaches can see players in their grassroots setting since July 2014. Continue reading Providence Recruiting Guide to the 1st April 2015 Live Evaluation Period

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 2015 National Prep School Invitational

While the Providence coaching staff probably won’t be able to attend much of this weekend’s National Prep School Invitational due to a road game at Xavier on Saturday there will be a number of Providence recruiting targets playing at Rhode Island College this weekend.

The NPSI begins on Thursday, February 5th and runs through Sunday, February 8th. There are teams from all over New England as well as teams from Florida, Kansas, South Carolina, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and even some international teams from Canada and the Czech Republic. Cox Hub will have live streaming available of 3 games each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The cost is $5/day or $9 for a month pass to get all NPSI streaming games.

Below is the full schedule of the event. All games will be played at Rhode Island College on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Providence. You’ll see that I’ve listed any Providence recruits that are playing in a particular game.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 10/24/14

With 2015 point guard Justin Robinson committing to Virginia Tech on October 12th Friar fans have been wondering if Ed Cooley and his staff have any other targets in the class of 2015 or would they just hang on to that scholarship and move on to the 2016 class. The reality is that a coaching staff can never stop recruiting and college rosters can change at seemingly any moment so hanging on to the scholarship might mean they use it on a midyear transfer or a spring commitment. With that said, there doesn’t appear to be any targets in 2015 that Cooley and his staff have zeroed in on after Robinson. Memphis wing LaGerald Vick announced his commitment to Larry Brown’s SMU Mustangs on Wednesday and Vick will also reclassify to 2016. Vick had gotten some late interest from the Friars in August and even scheduled an official visit to Friartown but that visit was ultimately cancelled. Davon Dillard was a name being mentioned in late August but I haven’t heard much of anything about him since he transferred from Bowman Academy (IN) to basketball factory Our Savior New American (NY).
