Thoughts from the Road: Friars Drop First Road Game at Ohio State

This Thoughts from the Road is the first Couch Edition of the season. While nothing replaces being at a game in person, watching on TV definitely gives a different perspective, some good and some bad (looking at you, Seth Davis).

  • In my preview of this game I wrote about how Providence needed to get off to a fast start on the road. That didn’t exactly happen. Neither team showed fluid offense early and there were quite a few whistles, including two early fouls on Emmitt Holt.

Breaking Down Providence’s 2016-17 Non-Conference Opponents, Part 1

Providence released their 2016-17 non-conference schedule and it features some interesting matchups to go along with the usual amount of buy games. The Friars home schedule is boosted by an improved Rhode Island Rams squad that has a chance to be ranked in the top 25 in the preseason with the return of EC Matthews from a knee injury suffered in URI’s first game last season. The Friars are again playing in the Gavitt Tipoff Games against a Big Ten opponent and they will play in the Emerald Coast Classic for their multi-team exempt event in the 2016-17 season. Below I’ll give a brief preview of each of Providence’s 7 non-conference games in November with some information on how those teams fared in 2015-16 and what to expect from them in 2016-17. The 6 non-conference games in December will get the same treatment.

2016 Gavitt Games Quick Look: Providence at Ohio State

Year 1 of the Gavitt Games saw the Big East and the Big Ten split the 8 games, 4-4. Villanova, Providence, St. John’s and Xavier beat their Big Ten foes, while DePaul, Georgetown, Creighton and Marquette dropped their games. Providence’s game against Illinois in the inaugural Gavitt Games was their most-watched non-conference game on Fox Sports 1 last season and came in 6th overall of their 18 games that aired that network in the 2015-16 campaign. Year 2 matchups have been leaked thanks to tweets from CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein. You can see all the matchups here. For now, I’m going to take a quick look at Providence’s matchup at Ohio State.
