Thoughts from the Road: Friars Drop First Road Game at Ohio State

This Thoughts from the Road is the first Couch Edition of the season. While nothing replaces being at a game in person, watching on TV definitely gives a different perspective, some good and some bad (looking at you, Seth Davis).

  • In my preview of this game I wrote about how Providence needed to get off to a fast start on the road. That didn’t exactly happen. Neither team showed fluid offense early and there were quite a few whistles, including two early fouls on Emmitt Holt.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Impress in Opener

  • First, I want to say how great it felt to be back at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for another season of Providence basketball. It was nice to see some familiar faces and talk hoops with people I only see at the Dunk.
  • As for the game, I was pleasantly surprised by how good Providence looked in their season opener with a lot of new players, both on the roster and in different roles.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Fall Short in Double OT at Marquette

This Thoughts from the Road: Home Command Center edition is brought to you by Ben Bentil’s 42 points and fueled by some Ash Wednesday pizza from Umberto’s.

  • On it’s face, losing a double OT game at Marquette probably wouldn’t be a horrific event in Providence’s season. But, if you take it out of that vacuum and look at this loss in it’s context as the 3rd straight Big East loss for the Friars, the result becomes increasingly worrisome for Ed Cooley’s bunch. The Friars are now 6-6 in league play with the final 3rd of their Big East season beginning at home on Saturday against Georgetown. They absolutely need to win that game to stop the bleeding. It also doesn’t help that this loss brings Providence’s record against Marquette in Milwaukee to a horrific 0-10.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Drop First Road Game at DePaul

This Thoughts from the Road: Laying in Bed Edition is brought to you by tweets from Dr. Vance Morgan and fueled by lasagna from Louie’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.

  • I was trying to decide if this game was harder to watch than the game at Creighton that Providence won, 50-48, at the buzzer. My conclusion was that the losing nature of the game did make it harder to watch. The in-game reasons that made each game hard to watch were the same: Providence couldn’t hit shots and they couldn’t clean their defensive glass. The overall rebounding disparity was much worse in this DePaul game, but the offensive rebounding numbers were similar. DePaul’s 18 offensive rebounds led to 22 second chance points against Providence’s 9 offensive rebounds leading to 8 second chance points. That 14 point differential was massive. The Friars are now 6-1 on the road this season.
