The search for a point guard is heating up for Ed Cooley and his staff and they have a lot of irons in the fire. They extended another offer to a 2016 lead guard on Monday with Word of God Christian Academy’s Jalen Harris being the recipient. Harris was visited at his home on Sunday by Providence coaches, according to Jamie Shaw of PhenomHoopReport.com. Recruiting News: Scout.com Released Post-Summer Class Of 2016 Top 100 Recruit Rankings

The same day that ESPN released their update class of 2016 Top 100 list after the summer grassroots season Scout.com also came out with their updated rankings. Wenyen Gabriel was a major mover in the Scout.com rankings and is the only player to be a new 5-star recruit since the last update. He also catapulted in the top 10 in Scout’s ranking after not even being ranked last time Scout released a Top 100 for this class. Gabriel’s rise has been meteoric.

Scout.com showed more love for Gabriel but not quite as much for other Providence recruits. Bruce Brown and Shamorie Ponds were much more highly thought of in ESPN’s version of rankings while Sedee Keita was ranked 80th overall in ESPN’s and not even close to the top 100 in Scout.com’s. Keita is listed as a 2-star recruit in Scout.com’s database. Having seen him play I don’t see how that’s possible.

2016 Shamorie Ponds announcing his final 4 schools via his Twitter account on Sunday. On Wednesday night it was reported by Adam Zagoria that Ponds has scheduled a visit to Providence on September 11th. The road from Sunday to Wednesday was an interesting one though. Ponds included the Friars in his final 4 list even though he had yet to speak with Ed Cooley. Apparently Cooley and Ponds have communicated because a visit date was added to the calendar to go along with visits to St. John’s on August 28th and Minnesota on September 18th. Ponds visited Creighton — the other school in his final 4 — last weekend.

Top-60 Recruit in 2016 Chooses Penn State Over Providence, Maryland, SMU & Temple

Tony Carr is one of the highest rated point guards in the class of 2016. With Providence searching to replace Kris Dunn likely after the 2015-16 season Carr included the Friars in his final 11 and then final 5 back in mid-July was a welcome development in Friartown. Carr, a native of Philadelphia, has been described by ESPN as “a late blooming point guard who has not only continued to grow, but also developed his game at a rapid rate.” ESPN ranks Carr as the 9th-best point guard in the class of 2016.
