Naadir Tharpe to Play in the D-League

Naadir Tharpe announced his intention to transfer from Kansas on May 1st. In the press release following his decision, Tharpe said “my daughter has current medical issues that require weekly visits to her physician, as well as with a specialist. At this juncture, I feel it is best to be closer to home where I can assist and support in any way.”

I don’t believe Providence was ever seriously in play as a landing spot for Tharpe. There were rumors that PC was concerned with the photo that was released of Tharpe and a topless 38 year old married woman right after the Jayhawks were bounced from the NCAA tournament. Another concern was rumored to be the fact that Tharpe was not guaranteed to be eligible immediately at his new school and that ruling would likely not come until he was enrolled at his new school for a month or more. With Ed Cooley and the Friars needing guard help for the 2014-15 season, it was likely too much of a risk to take a flyer on Tharpe.

Tharpe’s other local option was reportedly UMass. Joining Tharpe in the UMass backcourt next season would have been West Virginia transfer Jabarie Hinds (sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules) and returning players Trey Davis and Derrick Gordon. If Tharpe didn’t receive the waiver to play next season all 3 of those players can return plus Derrick Kellog has a pledge from 3 star 2015 point guard, Luwane Pipkins. So aside from the UMass backcourt being crowded, the scholarship situation in Amherst would have meant that Tharpe would have had to pay his own way at UMass.

Tharpe told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein that he intends to give it a go in the D-league.

Tharpe told Rothstein, “I didn’t want to sit out…At this point, I’d rather just try the D-League instead of sitting out a year to play a year [in college].”

Wake Forest Transfer Tyler Cavanaugh Chooses George Washington

Big man Tyler Cavanaugh who announced his intention to transfer from Wake Forest a few weeks ago has decided to transfer to George Washington. The Colonials recruited Cavanaugh out of high school. Ed Cooley also recruited Cavanaugh while the Providence head man was at Fairfield and Cooley had reached out to the stretch 4 but ultimately Cavanaugh only visited Butler, Dayton and GW.

He will have to sit a year per NCAA transfer rules and have 2 years of eligibility for the Colonials.

Impact of Josh Fortune’s Transfer

The news came down late Friday afternoon before Memorial Day Weekend and was a big shock to me when I saw it but Josh Fortune is in fact transferring from Providence College.

While some Friar fans are brushing off the news, this cannot be seen as anything but bad for an already thin backcourt for Ed Cooley’s 2014-15 squad. While I agree with people who say Fortune isn’t an irreplaceable player in terms of skill set, when you look at losing him in the context of the current roster situation, he’s pretty damn irreplaceable.  Right now, PC has the following guards on the roster:

  • Kris Dunn
  • Kyron Cartwright
  • Junior Lomomba
  • Casey Woodring

So just to recap the above – there is a point guard coming off a 2nd shoulder surgery who will not be rushed back, an incoming freshman backup point guard who was previously committed to Loyola Marymount and is ranked around the 45th point guard in the class of 2014, a transfer from Cleveland State who sat out last season and has a reputation as a defensive specialist and rim slasher and a walk on who saw a total of 10 minutes last season all in garbage time.

Losing Bryce Cotton and Kadeem Batts was tough enough but now the Friars are losing another player who averaged over 30 minutes per game in Fortune. Ed Cooley will now have to replace 103.5 minutes per game out of 200 from last season. PC will only have 3 players returning who played meaningful minutes last season in Henton, Harris and Desrosiers.
