Providence went 2-0 this week, including an impressive comeback win at Butler with their all-grit team playing most of the second half. The Friars also got an overtime win at home against Georgetown who was 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll last week. The Friars went 4 straight weeks without receiving any votes in either poll but following their 3-1 start to the Big East they are now getting some love from a few writers. That 3-1 Big East record is good for a tie for 1st place with Villanova, Seton Hall and DePaul. Providence got 16 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll which ranks them 33rd this week and 17 votes in the AP Poll which ranks them 29th this week.

National Polls Update: Week 9
Providence went 1-1 this week which was not good enough to garner any votes in week 9 which marks the 4th straight week that the Friars have gotten zero votes in either poll. The Friars have 2 games this week including a road game against Butler Tuesday night. Going 2-0 this week at Butler and versus Georgetown at home would go a long way towards impressing voters for week 10 and beyond.

National Polls Update: Week 8
Providence closed out their non-conference schedule on December 22nd with a 14 point win against Miami (FL) to finish 10-3 heading into conference play on NYE against Creighton. The Friars received zero votes in both polls in week 7. Week 8 is no different in the AP Poll or the USA Today Coaches Poll.

National Polls Update: Week 7
The Friars have righted the ship since the Brown loss by winning their 3rd straight game on Saturday but as I predicted it wouldn’t have enough juice to garner any votes in either poll. Prior to Miami’s horrible loss by 28 points at home against Eastern Kentucky Monday’s game against the Hurricanes on a neutral court in Brooklyn would have been a chance for a top 25 win but the Hurricanes have fallen out of both polls this week.

National Polls Update: Week 6
Providence went 2-1 since the last release of the national polls on December 8th but that loss was to Brown at home. After the loss to Boston College on December 5th the Friars were only receiving 4 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 0 votes in the AP Poll so it’s no real surprise that the Brown loss would be enough to stop all votes for Providence. The Friars only have 1 game this week which is on Saturday at home against UMass. A win there likely wouldn’t do much for their vote-getting appeal so I expect the Friars to be outside the national spotlight as they head to the Barclays Center on December 22nd to take on the 18th (AP)/19th (USA Today Coaches Poll) ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Week 5 Polls are Out; Friars Still Receiving Votes
After falling for the second straight game on the road Providence has managed to still be receiving votes in one national poll but not the other. The Friars got 4 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll which is good for 44th while Providence went from receiving 56 votes in last week’s AP poll to 0 votes this week in that poll.
Last week’s USA Today Coaches Poll had the Friars receiving 50 votes. This could be a good week for the Friars to make a move back towards the top 25 with 3 games this week against Brown, Rhode Island and Stony Brook. Providence opponent Yale got 1 vote in the AP poll this week after knocking off UConn last week.
